For the third consecutive year BLUE and global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright hosted a ‘Perspectives On…’ panel discussion focused on a topical issue facing shipping. This year’s theme, ‘The Implications of the EU’s MRV Regulation’ raised fierce debate on compliance approaches and considerations surrounding the EU’s MRV requirements from our panelists –from the European Commission, UK Chamber of Shipping, Parker Kittiwake Procal, Verfiavia, and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics.
A key take-away from the day was that panelist and European Commission Policy Officer Heiko Kunst insisted that the door remained open to MRV becoming mandatory, and global, through IMO legislation. However, it was clear there were key elements of the European Commission policy that the IMO’s MEPC MRV working group were not considering. Case in point was that the EC says all data should be accessible publicly whereas the IMO was not currently considering this.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the discussion, both in the room and through the online webinar.
